Lately my dad has been getting dizzy spells when he stands up and while he is standing up. He said he is fine but kinda foggy when he is sitting down. This morning he called my sister right after one happened because he was kinda scared (oh by the way he is 80 and in perfect condition, more active than me) and my sister said that his words were kinda slered. Has anyone ever had this happen to them or know what it could be causing this?

Your Dad should see a family doctor immediately. Could be many one of several health matters. His ears, his blood pressure, his cholesterol or a lot of other medical concerns. In most cases a blood test would diagnose the problem. At 75 my mom experienced the same symptoms. My mom had a thyroid problem and also suffered a mild stoke. Seeing a doctor soon as possible could prevent other medical conditions happening. Have a good God Bless.

Being 80, he probably hates going to the doctor. If he won't go, try this....

Off-hand, I'd say his blood pressure is getting up there. If he is not on Fish Oil supplements, he should get on them. Buy him a bottle of 1000mg Fish Oil gels and have him take them twice a day. Same thing happened to my Dad and he's 70. He started taking the gels and now he feels great.

Get him to a doctor now. Slurred speech is one indication of stroke. When you stand up your blood pressure can change quickly which can make you feel dizzy. However slurred speech it is time to go to the ER. If he is having mini strokes or has had a stroke the sooner he gets treatment the better his chances of recovery. Slurred speech in a otherwise healthy person. Its time to see a doctor.

our grandad is 93 and is in excellent condition, but had that as well...and.it was vertigo.....I looked as well and found this.....
BPPV(vertigo) is a common cause of dizziness. About 20% of all dizziness is due to BPPV. The older you are, the more likely it is that your dizziness is due to BPPV, as about 50% of all dizziness in older people is due to BPPV. In a recent study, 9% of a group of urban dwelling elders were found to have undiagnosed BPPV

If this has been happening of late, you need to get your father medical attention quickly.

It may be something as simple as just being dehydrated, but it may also be signs of something more serious. Slurred speech may reflect not enough blood flowing to the brain. This may be due to low blood pressure, but may also be due to a blockage in a blood vessel going to the brain or stroke. It may also be a sign of the heart not pumping strongly enough to get blood to the brain. It could also be a sign of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

At his age, he will definitely need different tests. I would recommend that you bring him to your local emergency department immediately.

IT could be diabetic..or high blood pressure. you should have him checked by a doctor, being that he's 80 years old and thats a delicate age. May the lord bless him, and hope that he will last 40 plus years more.

You'd better take him to the doctor or the Emergency. He probably has very high blood pressure and is in danger of having a stroke.

It can be either because of low blood pressure (the blood rushing to your head) or because he doesn't drink enough water.

You still might want to ask a doctor.

He needs to go to the Dr asap because it could be something like his blood pressure, or vertigo.
