together when they go out. I call them and they come from different directions. We have had all 4 of them for at least a year. They play together when they're inside but they also have occasional spats. Why is this?

I think that's pretty normal. My cats rarely "hang out". Every once in a while they lick each other or chase each other, but mostly they are loners.

If you find they have the spats more often after being outside that would explain it. They have there own territory spot outside thats for them and them only. Most cats have their own spot as well for doing their duty. If one see's the other go near that spot outside this can cause a fuss between them . Its normal for cats to act different when outdoors and indoors. Its nothing to worry about though.
P.S. Nice photo by the way. If your cat its a beauty.
Take care & enjoy your pets.

Like humans cats have their own interests outside of the house. You may co-habitate with someone and not have the same interests as that person, so outside of the house you do different things...kinda like you cats. They probly like each other enough inside the house.

cats are usually solitaire animals, probably inside the house the play together but outside they want to be alone.

Cats are too independent. Get dogs if you want them to stay close to each other.
