Counterfeit Christianity is probably the best description I can give for a cult. Counterfeit Christianity is an imitation of real Christianity. Bible terms like "Jesus Christ, Resurrection, Salvation, and Atonement" are used by the Cult, but the various cult groups have assigned entirely different meanings to these terms.
Like counterfeit money which is sometimes difficult to detect, so it is difficult to detect counterfeit Christianity, since it looks like the real thing. Experts examining counterfeit money often hold it up to a strong light and look for identifying marks. Counterfeit Christianity also has identifying marks, which can be seen when, held up to an even stronger light, the light of God's word, the bible.
We are at an advantage if we know what to expect from a cult. Cultists are very well trained to appear "Christian", and indeed believe they are the true churches, and you need the deliverance! Therefore, be bold and ask the question, "do you believe the group you represent is the only true church on the face of the earth?"
If they reply that they are, or if they are evasive, making remarks like "Well, every church has a measure of truth but...", you have made an early detection of a Cultist.
Every true Christian, if asked the same question, regardless of his denomination, would reply that the true church is comprised of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and HE (not some organization) is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE, (John 14:6). No legitimate denomination would claim that they alone and their members have salvation exclusively, but the cults (the counterfeits) do.

What do I personally define as a "cult"?? Well the way I see it the only difference between a "cult", "group/club/brotherhood/fraternity" etc and a "religion" is terminology. All religion, cults, groups etc seem mindless to me in their dogmatic group morality or lack thereof, the utter lack of questioning and curiosity, the blind faith and sheep-like follower mentality is the same in all religions all cults and all groups(eg Masons, KKK, PETA) Its all the same shiit, just a different pile, as far as I am concerned and based on the observations I have made over the years. To me a cult is any group of people who are blind, ignorant, narrow-minded, fanatic and completely illogical, irrational and incendiary.

Any human activity - usually lip service - that contradicts it's reason for existence of what ever program that is done to create codependent reliance. This causes a personal breakdown in ability to live a joyful, independent, healthy life. You've heard reference to a "dirty cop"...those two words don't belong together. It means a criminal posing as a peace keeper ...an impostor.
In religion it's called blasphemy and dogmatic practice. This is the description of an educated Pastor, Priest, Minister, Deacon, etc passing themselves off as God instead of teaching God's word the way it it is suppose to be done. It is not found in only one religion it's human sin. It would be equal to a math teacher feeling he/she has the power to change the fact that 1+1=2. However, not that easy to spot.
Secular science and government combined is another big example of codependency today manifesting itself via followers in creating the illusion of "help" but trust only us and get away from your family.
There are countless examples of a cult...just keep in mind that that words signifies unhealthy living, unbalance, and self- destruction while simutaniously being destroyed.
Any relationship that is unloving, manipulative, and dishonest can be considered to be a cult. Gang leader/gang member or insecure/territorial wife or husband and compliant spouse.
Most is done for monetary purposes or has an agenda of total power. This is only an illusion because if anyone has to be manipulative and dishonest to stay in any position concerning any manner one is creating chaos and attempting complete control over a life or lives of others.

A cult is generally a perverted form of a religion which tends to either manipulate a person's finances, isolation from the public, or prevert someone's behavior. In essence though, any religion that differs from the one you believe in would be considered a cult, as any false religion would prevert what religion you believe in by either making false claims or perverting the truth you believe in.

Any funny reverence of some unnatural objects is cult, not religion.
All the revelations of the Messengers of the One True God in their Holy Books is religion. I see no strange religion, only strange cult. Religion is from Divine Wisdom; cult is from man's ignorance.

A bunch of loonies babbling the same nonsense over and over like demented parrots. A charismatic leader who is loved and respected whether it is deserved or not. Fraud. Extortion. Child abuse. Callous disregard for human life. Isolation and refusal to associate with non-cult members. Denial in the face of truth. Emotional attachment to cult philosophy and obsession with indoctrinating others. Glorification of death as the path to some better future.
Basically, all religions. The followers of Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith, and Mohammad are just as nuts as the followers of Jim Jones, Charles Manson, and Dave Koresh were.

My definition of a cult is any group of organized individuals bent on forcing others to their religion. Christians and Muslims in particular. How can you preach peace, prosperity, good will toward men, free will for men, all the while killing in the name of a god?

A cult is anything that a person is leading- like a man who is professing to know the truth and many follow him instead of what the Bible says- anything that is contrary to what the word of God says, and those who follow after ravenous wolves in sheeps clothing---instead of following the Lord. Many get caught up in a person- like a preacher or leader of some sort- and are brainwashed. They do not rely on the scriptures but rely on what that person has to tell them, and those people twist the meanings of scriptures- also many cults will move from town to town, or Hide out and not let those of their "church" contact any outside family. So there are many types of cults. How you know is one who changes the word of God or adds to it and builds their own relegion out of that....such as mormonism and jehovah's witnesses- they have twisted the word and added to it. The book of mormon was written by Joseph Smith- many cling to what he says, instead of what God says. Does that make sense?

A cult is typically a group of people that regard a living breathing human as a god and follow him no matter how crazy it gets.

They practice strange ungodly rituals, they practice polygamy, they practice blood atonement, they do things in secrecy, they don't do the teachings of the bible they have strange teachings.
They may appear good outwardly but inwardly they are evil.
There are many religions different then mine that I don't think of as cults. Cults have that "there's something wrong with this picture" to them.
