Well travelled: no, he DIDN'T grant them an exemption. They have to abide by the law.

Meh....something out of nothing. Gay couples can still adopt if they use non-Catholic agencies. Who wants a catholic baby anyway? Guilt complex and a warped view of women....no ta.

Seriously, any religion that treats consenting same sex relationships with more disdain than it treats paedophilia within its own body is beyond suspect. That the PM of the UK takes this bunch of dogmatic maniacs seriously is a condemnation of our nation.

I'd rather be a raging queen than a catholic or a Labour voter!

I am disappointed but not surprised.

+ Homosexuality +

The Catholic Church believes there is nothing sinful about being homosexual. But homosexuals like all unmarried people are called to celibacy.

Unmarried cohabiting couples, whether heterosexual or homosexual, are living in sin.

+ Adoptions +

The issue at hand is that Catholic adoption agencies in the England and Wales handle about one-third of all private adoptions.

The Catholic Church regularly matches orphans with married (heterosexual) couples. People who are living as our religion believes God intended.

There is a new law taking effect in April that says that the adoption agencies will have to place children with homosexual couples.

Catholics believe that not only it is not in the best interest of the child to place them in an environment of immorality and sin that if they follow the law then they themselves will be sinning in the process.

Catholic doctors are not forced to perform abortions. Catholic prison workers are not forced to execute prisoners. Catholics are not forced to commit what they believe to be sinful acts in any other part of society.

What happened to freedom of religion?

Rather than go against its beliefs, the Church will probably leave the field of adoptions in the country.

+ With love in Christ.

The Catholic Church is one of the leading agencies to find homes for orphaned children. Now, they will be disallowed to help the children in England.

Yet, this "IS" the country that constitutionally discriminates against a Catholic citizen from being married to their monarchy.

Bigotry lives. Quite fashionable these days. Ahhh, penny century such chic, panache, so English.

The Catholic agencies will have 21 months to adapt to the new law. After that time they will have to comply with it. Other agencies/services have to comply from April when it comes into force. Saw it on the news earlier.

Did Tony find his balls again? Good for him! Mr. Bush must have let Tony borrow them for a while!

Well-travelled, below me, I think you're not getting it. If you do NOT allow them being exempt, it means that the Catholic Church must obey the law about placing people with gay couples.

Um, did the first two responders miss something? Blair allowed the church to NOT obey the law that everyone else has to obey, which is that they are REQUIRED to place children with (qualifying) gay couples.
In other words, Blair allowed the church to continue its bigoted practices in defiance of national law. Just because their superstitions tell them "gay is bad."
I think his decision stinks.
Is he going to allow discrimination against gays by businesses who think "gay is bad" too? No? Then the church deserves no such exemption.
