then why when Valentine's Day approaches do we constanstly hear reminders about what to get your lady to make her happy on Valentines Day. You never hear, "Ladies here are some tips so end up in his good graces, and not the doghouse." Anyone agree?

Some of you are missing my point. My issue is that it is a "love" day for both sexes not just women. I understand the part on shopping issues with men.

I am a 26 yr old woman and I totally agree. There's ads in the papers, commercials, and fliers to help guys out and give them good ideas about Valentine's Day(and that's great). There is nothing to give us women ideas as to what our men might like. You can't ask them, that's just wrong. Men should receive a gift for Valentine's Day also, it's love day for both sexes not just woman and it would be nice if more men put out their ideas somewhere telling us what they may want.

Yes, it's a humorous topic, but the more men buy into this nonsense, even on a trivial matter such as Valentine's Day, the more they reinforce gender roles to their own detriment. Women want equality only when it suits them. They want a bevy of material things but expect the man to be the primary "provider" (chicks love this word). Women do not usually provide 50% of the income, as 'equality' would require. It seems that everything a woman does comes from calculated self-interest.

Men and women ARE supposed to be treated as equals, but the retail industry has always been slow to recognize this. There are, however, a lot of girls who ask what to give, especially here. At least you recognize the need for equal treatment. You get the Rio Madeira Seal of Approval!

Because women are way better at remembering romantic things like that and really don't need reminders. I'm sorry but in this instance men absolutely need every single reminder. If you're upset about it, you should blame your fellow men for having such poor memories.

i agree with the above but women also have a tendancy to do less things to make her man mad. men on the other hand make many mistakes (usually) so they along with hallmark decided that valentines day is a day to win points for the next ime they screw up :)

No. It's just that guys need more help in finding a gift for their woman. Since women love to shop they're fine with acquiring a gift for their man.

most men are clueless about what to get their woman for an occasion, hence the tips provided to them by all sources.

we on the other hand are spontaneous creatures. we know through instinct what to get because we enjoy shopping. let's just say we are always trying harder than most of you guys are.

Men are [suppose] to be the persuers. They are the ones that ask for a lady's hand in marriage.

So just tell your girlfriend you think it's unfair & want her to buy you something.
I'm buying mine a cymbol. How much more romantic can you get then that? :)

We are equal but different.
But you're right- you never see any reminders about how to be a good wife, it's all about changing him, demanding he do things your way, and getting him to suit your needs.
