It's a paradise! The shopping totally rocks! They have over 22 malls, countless restaurants, and hiking, fishing, rock climbing, swimming, wading, sunbathing, roller blading, water skiing, surfing, snowmobiling, nude jogging, just to name a few!

I spend quite a bit of time in Northridge since some of my family has lived there for 25 years, and work very close by. It's suburban. There's the Northridge Mall with your typical stores and movie theater. It's located in the San Fernando basin, so you're going to have to drive to the surrounding hills to find some nature for hiking and outdoorsy stuff.
There isn't a whole lot of specialty dining or clubbing to be found. Believe me. I work in the area, and I sure wish we could find a nice bar for an after-work happy hour! It's a place to raise your family, you know?
But if you're staying with friends in Northridge, Hollywood and the beach communities are within driving distance. Most folks live in a safe, cheaper area like Northridge, and drive to the "west side" for a night out on the town.

It's pretty much your typical CA suburb. Nothing special about the area,it's in the San Fernando Valley. Mostly single family homes and strip malls. It's not bad or anything, just nothing special about it. Any resturants or shopping you find in Northridg you can pretty much find anywhere else in the country. The malls there have the same stores as anywhere else. LA's Westside has much more to do and more unique dining and shopping options not found anywhere else.

Philo is yanking your chain.
I'm wondering why Northridge is your chosen destination, but to each his own.
NR is a pretty typical valley suburb. Pricey, gated homes mixed in with rows of apartment buildings rife with gangs.
There is a substantial mall there, movie theaters, your usual compliment of stores and restaurants.
Not much else unless you dare to venture beyond the city limits.
