After I arrange the icons in my desktop, and I restart windows xp, they tend to regroup to the left side of the screen and not around the desktop area where I want them. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Arrange your icons the way you want them, then right-click the Desktop, select "Arrange Icons By" and uncheck "Autoarrange". Your icons should remain in place the next time you restart.
