It depends on what style you are trying to sing. I think that a vocal coach is a very good idea. Breath support is a very important part of singing no matter what style you are going for.

It really takes practice to sing well, but there are ways to improve your singing skills effectively. You can try by singing with your stomach---called the "abdomen" way of singing (lay on bed, and sing with the air you take into the lower part of your stomach, instead of breathing with your lungs.) It's pretty simple after you get on the right track.

Find a voice teacher through your school or church. Make sure you get along well with them and that they give you proper motivation. Work hard and don't expect immediate results. Learning how to sing takes time.

your choir at school will help you improve as long as youve got a good teacher. get voice lessons if you can, and sing in church too if you go to church. Record yourself!!!! thats how i got better, cuz i was able to hear what I liked and what I didn't. so ya I hope this helps and Im sure youll do good singing :-)
