Where some people here get their info astounds me.
If you cannot pass the color test during your medical exam, you have two choices, either you will have a a limitation of day flying only,
or you can request a FSDO inspector give you a "SODA " Statement of Demonstrated Ability evaluation
----------------------------------------------------------------------
From the FAA:
F. Defective Color Vision. Applicants for a medical
certificate who have defective color vision may be
tested at twilight or at night. The applicant may be
evaluated for the ability to see the following:
(1) colored lights of other aircraft in the
vicinity
(2) runway approach lights
(3) airport boundary lights
(4) taxiway lights
(5) red warning lights on television towers,
high buildings, stacks, etc.
(6) all color signal lights normally used in air
traffic control
G. Aviation Signal Light Test. Night testing may be
very important to airmen, since applicants able to identify
colors appropriately at night (but not during
daylight) may have the night restriction removed from
the medical certificates. An applicant who fails the
signal light test during daylight hours may repeat the
test at night.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The light gun signal test is very simple, have your flight Instructor make an appointment with the control tower to "practice" before your
test. there is only three colors.even if you cant tell red white or green, you can "learn" which is which.. Have them flash red, your
instructor tells you that is red, repeat until you can tell red (even if YOU see purple) just learn what you see as purple
is really red. repeat for green and white, After doing so, schedule the "official test". 90% of people that go this route pass,
Dont let this deficiency stop your dream!!!
edit: jb,,,,,,, the farnsworth test is no longer accepted,

Ok... long story. First of all, if you can see color, than you are not necessarily color blind. You simply may have a color deficiency. I had this same problem when I went and applied for my first medical certificate a few years ago. I was unable to pass the test that is usually given in the book (circles and numbers). The AME I saw gave me a medical, but with a restriction on it. I went to my eye doctor, and she referred me to someone that gave me the Farnsworth Lantern test. You have like 100 little caps, each with a different shade of color on it. You have to arrange them in order from like red to green (or something like that, it's been a while). The results from that test were forwarded back to my eye doctor, and she determined that my color deficiency was "clinically insignificant". The results from the test, along with a letter from my eye doctor was then sent to the FAA in Oklahoma City. The FAA accepted the paperwork, and sent me a letter to serve as evidence that I passed an alternate test. So now, whenever I go to an AME for a medical, I simply present the letter, and I don't ever have to take the color test again. And the good thing is, it is not considered a waiver or SODA, so you have a perfectly good and clean medical for the airlines. Hope this helps!

You can fly on a commercial license with the waiver mentioned above. I have never been able to pass the color vision test since my first medical in 1968.I also held a first class physical for 1 year when I flew freight in Convairs. It's up to your employer to decide whether or not to hire you with a waiver. I doubt any major airline would consider you but there are many other pilot jobs available that are just as good or better than the airlines. Just apply yourself and you can still do very well in aviation.

In order to obtain a medical the FAA requires you to be able to perceive those colors necessary for the safe performance of airman duties. If you don't pass this portion at the medical you can get a limitation on your medical, your file will have to be sent to the FAA in Oklahoma where they make the final decision on your medical condtion. You can get a Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA) which shows that although you have a medical condition you have performed your pilot duties at not danger to the general public.
My dad is color blind and has held a third class medical for years!

Yes, you can get a private pilots license only. They give a colour blind test, but you can apply for a waver if you can distinguish red and green apart from a distance.
I have had several deaf pilot friends in the past. they can fly but must have someone aboard who can hear and communicate.
You should have no problem getting a waver if you can distinguish the red from the green lights. good luck and enjoy your private license.

when you're colour blind, your imaginitive and prescient is imperfect. even if you may develop right into a pilot with colour blindness relies upon on the severity of the colour blindness. contained in the USA, operating example, you may develop right into a pilot even with when you're colour blind. you should take particular licensed medical colour imaginitive and prescient tests and bypass them; in case you may't bypass them, you obtain a license with a decrease that does no longer allow you to fly at evening or with colour signal administration (which effectively prevents you from turning out to be an airline pilot, notwithstanding that is basic to fly privately). in case you fail the classic medical tests, that is basic to take really specialist tests geared especially in direction of aviation; in case you deal with to bypass those, you'll get a license with none decrease. So, as long as you may bypass between the licensed tests, you'll get a license and develop right into a commercial pilot, if it is your purpose. in case you may't bypass the tests, you may in many cases nonetheless get a license with regulations, notwithstanding the constraints will ward off you from getting a job as a specialist pilot (you'll in user-friendly words be able to fly on your own, no longer for employ, and in user-friendly words in remark of the constraints). because you're saying your colour blindness is extreme, you would no longer be able to bypass the tests, yet you received't recognize for effective except you try. And in case you in user-friendly words want a private pilot's license, you may likely nonetheless get one even with in case you do not bypass the tests. This all applies to the united states, yet i imagine maximum different industrialized countries have similar regulations. the regulations that practice to you're those of the country in which you try to get a license.

nope because color differentiate the sides of the aircraft, right is green and left is red. this lets other pilots at low light or night conditions tell which direction the plane is moving.

if u're responsible stop here. u don't want to endanger people with yr eye problem. pilots requirement is perfect eyesight. when they're older they are far-sighted, that could be corrected with glasses. but color blind... ! could u tell the highway from the runway? taxi lights against runway lights? can u differentiate the PAPI from bright street lights? tower beacons from other aircrafts? when u're taxiing can u tell the aircraft in front is going towards or away from u? we're all worried!...

No. You need to be able to pass an Ishihara Test (numbers & letters presented as blobs of closely contrasted colours).

If you fail you cannot be aircrew.
