Conscription was one reason. The other is too difficult for people today to understand.
People back then believed in right and wrong and were prepared to make sacrifice. Today sacrifice means owning a Toyota instead of a Lexus. Also soldiers had a sense of national pride, that does not exist today. There is no
pride in where we are from , everyone wants to moan about the country they live in. Unfortunately, we have all become totally selfish. I could go on all night.

Americans were Patriots back then (just about all). Most thought we would be drawn into the European war front because of Hitler invading Poland in 1939 but on December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked our Navy and facilities at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 1/3 of our Navy was badly damaged or destroyed. President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare War on 8 December which they overwhelmingly did. When a nation gets attacked, the Patriots are always the first to stand in her defense.

At that time it was a draft, I don't think you had much of a choice when the Germans are knocking at your door. But there were some people with a cause, who really believed in what they were fighting for.
But bottom line, it was a draft of a global scale that lead most WWII soldiers to war.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the catalyst behind the wave of patriotism/vengeance that overtook the emotions of most Americans in 1941.
In 1941, the American people were not as pre-occupied with themselves and their personal goals, that they weren't willing to put their plans aside to fight an enemy.
In 2001, we saw a glimpse of that same patriotism that our parents and grandparents responded to in 1941, but it was short lived for this generation. It was short lived because it became fashionable for politicians to use the war as political fodder against the decision makers of today.
Today, these ugly little political foes tell us that we should bring our troops home. They don't talk about Islamic Jihad, or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who is to Islam today, what bin Laden was to Islam six years ago; a treacherous, evil, enemy of democracy! They don't talk about Islam being our mortal enemy who's objective is to destroy our country. This would not serve them well if they talked about these things, it might conflict where their mantra to bring home the troops.
Perhaps the great generation did an outstanding job of saving our country and democracy itself, to that end I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Where did that spirit go, where are all those patriots, today? Are we so pre-occupied with our computers, I-pods, Japanese cars, and international vacations that we won't step back and ask; 'what can we do for our country?"

While many went to avenge Pearl Harbor, a good number of them were drafted before and during involvement in the war.

The easy answer is the attack on Pearl Harbor. But many Americans had come to believe that Hitler had some evil plans for America and had to be stopped.

In order for evil to triump is for good men to do nothing.(Edmund Burch). So much has changed in our history and I do believe that there still are men with honor and a sense of love and duty to their fellow man that they would be willing to put their lives in danger to protect others. A sense that God gives man to do the right thing and do not faer for their stength comes from above. To acknowledge and understand that there is evil in this world and confront it head on. GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS and GOD BLESS AMERICA. (from an American Bigot)

Hitler told his soldiers to enter Poland. As soon as that happened, soldiers were involved.

The draft.
Thank your lucky stars that there is no draft today, like there was in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
