Does anyone have experience with either the 357/44 mag? I'm not familiar with Taurus' quality. People seem to consider it a poor man's S&W.

Taurus Firearms has indeed been called a poor-mans Smith, but that was years ago. Today Taurus is every bit as innovative and well respected as Smith and Wesson, and deservedly so. Fit, quality and finish meet high U.S. standards, and they are giving Smith a real run for their money in the revolver market. You should see all the models they have produced! They are fine guns. You can't go wrong buying one. I've shot several, and have no complaints. (Being cheaper than a Smith doesn't hurt matters either!)

Tuarus started out life ripping off other comapnies' designs, that's why their revolvers look more than a little like S&W. Ten or more years ago, their quality was generally crap and a lot of their guns were in the "Saturday NIght Special" category. Now, however, though most of their designs are still strikingly similar to someone else's (they make a fine clone of the Beretta 92), their quality is top-of-the-line. I have an 8 5/8" Stainless model 44, .44 Magnum, and it is a pleasure to shoot, much nicer in fact than any other .44 Magnum I've fired.
