I have asked a number of questions here about the existence of God and/or the theory of evolution. One theme seems to stand out from many of the answers I have received. One person answered 'because you can't see the wind, do you question that it exists?', and another answered, 'if we are decended from apes, then who made the apes?', plus many other similar answers.
Isn't it plain to see how unintelligent these answers are, and how stunted their view of the world realy is? Darwins theory explains much more than our evolution from apes, yet many people who are deeply religious WILL not or CANNOT understand (or even read) what scientists spend their entire lives explaining for the benefit of the human race!
What hope is their for an educated debate here when so many 'believers', are unable to open their minds to the issues?

I was once a bible thumping fundy. When having a "debate" with a grad student in micro biology, he ended up banging his head against the wall - literally.

If I could "come around" - anybody can come around. It takes lots of patience. First they have to understand what it is they MISunderstand about evolution. Once they have that, the rest starts falling into place.

Do you really think that just because you are the 'creator' that your creation should be just as intelligent as you? And who said we are God's 'intelligent design'? 'Intelligent design' is a man made scientific definition to God being the beginning and the end. God never called us His intelligent design, He calls us His children. Yes and God created the universe, and what exactly is that empty space used for? Nobody knows its just a mystery as to why we are in a galaxy and (from what is known) we are the only planet that harbors life. So what gives? There are many things out there that are useless, people invent things that are useless, but if that is the way a species was designed then lets just say useless it may seem, but it defines a species and helps to differentiate between other species. That is the essence of nature. Not everything is to be used, but we make use of what we can . That being said, what would be the use of satan, in a world that was once only pure, perfect and good?

The best example of whether God exist is the Human Brain.

Studies, like that done by the University of Michigan, and features in the Discovery Channel program, The Amazing Life of the Human Brain, shows just how amazing the human brain is.

Every second while awake, we are absorbing 40MBs of data per second. That’s 144 gigabytes per hour and about 2 terabytes per day. That’s a lot of data even for the largest computer. When we sleep at night, and only at night or under nighttime conditions, all that data is sorted and stored through the creation of synaptic connectors and biochemical bounds. The brain has enough volume to allow for the creation of these storage connectors to last over 10,000 years.

Without the need of a creator, what evolutionary pressure could cause the need for this much volume that would take that long to fill? Clearly, man was either created by God to live that long, or if evolve, once lived that long, and has since de-evolved to what we are today. Which do you think it is?

Evolution does take place, in that animals have evolved and humans have de-evolved since the time of the creation. Many divergent species are related, such as the Meerkat/Hyena and the Lion/House cat. A house cat can breed with a lion, I wonder if the same is possible the Hyena and Meerkat?

This is why I believe in God. I use the brain he gave me, and designed for me, to determine something beyond imagining.

tn_lovett I love your answer. I am a christian but I do have an open mind and I dont use the cliche christian answers in debates. I understand Darwins theory , but it is only a theory and I dont understand why so many claim it is absolute truth. Why can evolutionists do this, but when christians do, its offensive or weak? I would rather take the chance and believe someone intelligent made all this and spend eternity with Him than to take the chance and believe a theory that could be wrong. It is every mans right to believe what he will, however I do like discussing these things and admit I still have a lot to learn and I dont have all the answers.

First off for all of you people that are following the whole "but evolution is just a theory" line, how about this tidbit of information : gravity is just a theory too and how humans reproduce is just a theory too. So as you can see, there are many theories that have been proven and evolution is among those. In fact, most accepted things in science are theories. What I ask of all you naysayers is to provide me with an ounce, just one ounce, of proof that anything in the bible is real or has ever been scientifically proven.

You're wasting your time. Religionists (finally) lost the debate over the heliocentric solar system, the creation theory is their last refuge. Evolution as a theory is 'work in progress'-the default position is not a literal interpretation of genesis. Wish there could be a site for creationshits and IDiots to talk among themselves without interfering in intelligent debate among qualified experts. Really, it's for their own good. This site should be for intellectually mature adults only.

The Creation stories in the Bible (and there are two) do not come into conflict with the teachings of the Catholic Church. St Augustine, (in a Latin tract I read recently) , back in the fourth century spoke in one of his books about creation, that the Creation stories can never conflict with the claims of science as science advances. It would be ludicrous, he says. In fact the Greeks had two words for time Chronos (time in days and minutes and hours) and Chrainos which is an epoch, or God's time. The 'days' in the Bible then are periods of times, during which Darwin's creative phases might have come into being. The guy who discovered the ;big bang' theory was a Catholic priest. We believe God uses natural things in all his creation. There are also many clever and respected scientists and doctors who are devoutly religious. The intelligent design idea is a comparatively recent Protestant fundamentalist idea .I think, Perhaps, GOD, you don't understand that there are fundamentalists who believe everything as they interpret it themselves, without consulting or studying seriously all the scholarship on the issue.
On the issue of the existence of God,St Thomas Aquinas say some people are chosen to answer the call of the Holy Spirit,Faith is given to them as a gift from God, which they have answered.Belief follows on from this.If you don't have God's gift of Grace, you have not been chosen, and you simply cannot understand where Christians are coming from. You will never ever understand unless God opens your mind. Recently Darwin's theories have come under intense scrutiny from more scientists who have said one epoch did not follow from the other and now believe the evolution took place concurrently, after all you do have fish as well as amphibia and different reptiles etc today. Notice man is the last of the species to be created, exactly as Darwin wrote.Notice also that man was originally Vegetarian in his natural state (as per Genesis) and that he is given the responsibility for the welfare of all animals and the environment of our wonderful world, something we are only now beginning to take seriously. So that's good news isn't it?Perhaps Genesis is worth reading and studying.

If you want to judge this answer, read all first.

Petty human beings afraid of the unknown need to create an explanation for it. GOD DOES have it's place in society, I'm not a believer in the traditional sense, as any being that powerful is going to be far beyond wanting anybody to worship it, in fact will be less inclined to see their worthiness for existence if they waste the gift of life he gave them in such a primitive way.

I do believe they're may have been some form of creator, a being so far beyond our own intelligence we cannot even begin to conceive it's existence, that could answer all the questions of life.

Perhaps this creator designed us to map out his own evolution or past, perhaps we simply evolved with no outside interference, perhaps were a point in our own history where we at some point traveled back in time to plant the seeds of our own existence. The truth is nobody knows, and will never know before the end of the universe. The God story was created by the human fear of the unknown, yet much of the Bible is frighteningly accurate in one sense or another. Even the Iraq war was prophesied.

I am aware scrolls etc can be translated to mean whatever you want, and do not believe the nonsense taught by the church (one of the most deeply offensive violations of the teachings of Christ and the bible ever to exist)as this is a typified exercise in money-making ever to have been designed. E.g Pope Jean Paul owned a Ferrari Enzo, £500,000 worth of car, when children in Africa are starving, have no roof over their heads, and have no word for hospital. Is that a man that has learned the teachings of Christ? Or the teachings of Adolf Hitler? How can any man say they have not violated the deadly sin of greed when this so clearly points to that very crime?

This is a combination of my own personal feelings or the situation and of fact, but I believe it puts a true light on the real beliefs of the church (money), and the afore-mentioned lack of intelligence of the human race.

I have to agree completely. And especially with your follow up point about tn_lovett. Particularly liked this part of the answer "As for scientists, I'm glad that they are out there. But, have you ever heard of Occum's Razor? To me, one Creator God seems the obvious choice."

And said without a single trace of irony!! How hard is it to stick to things you know when answering a question? For a start it's Occam's Razor not Occum, and if you look it up you'll find it supports evolution. You'll also find it's used on religion. I quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_Razor: "if the concept of God does not help to explain the universe, it is argued, God is irrelevant and should be cut away (Schmitt 2005). While Occam's razor cannot prove God's nonexistence, it does imply that, in the absence of compelling reasons to believe in God, disbelief should be preferred."

What amazes me is that people believe the creationist twaddle over science.

I'm pretty bored with this so-called 'debate'.

To The Truth. . . I reckon that if William of Occam had wanted to join in this discussion he'd have had to grow a beard.

There is no debate! Creationism is an attempt by Christian fundamentalists to gain power. It has absolutely NO legitimacy apart from a literal acceptance of the words of the Old Testament.

The problem is that, if we let them get away with it, we're on the road back to the ducking stool and the auto da fe. In my opinion!
