You cannot just burn them to MP3 via the preferences, if you downloaded the song from Itunes.

If you downladed the song from Itunes, you would first have to burn them to an Audio CD, as a wav file. Once you have them in wav format, you can import them back into Itunes as MP3's

I know you can create mp3's in windows media player, so you should be able to rip songs from itunes in that. Im not sure how though

Right Click on iTunes you want to listen to it will open a list in the list there will be a program says open with them it will open another list at the bottom it would say choose program it well open another window in the list box it will say recommends programs at the below click Windows media player

you can use iTunes to rip to MP3

just check your preferences and change this into MP3
I like MP3 better, so that I can copy this later to another MP3 palyer, I might not stick with ipod
