What type of dog is it? Some only require brushing, while others have a pretty complicated hair style.

I have some good grooming reference materials linked on my website burdicklabradors.com on the helpful links page. You can also do an internet seach. Search by grooming then your breed name.

First you must learn what a properly groomed dog of your breed should look like. Your breeder should be able to show / teach you.
Next, you need the proper tools to do the job yourself.
Lastly, you need to practice to make sure you're doing it right. Again, your breeder can show you.
