Petechiae are actually small capillary blood vessels breaking, leaking blood. Have you had a followup platelet count? It may take some time.

Tiny petechiae disappear in about 3- 5 days after the platelet counts recover, while larger and deeper spots take longer, unless the petechiae are caused by something else. Its a little unusual to have petechiae with a platelet count of 80,000, but everyone is different. It usually takes lower counts than this to cause petechiae. There could be something else contributing to the lack of clotting (which is the cause of petechiae). If things don't improve in another 2 days, it would be a good idea to call your doctor. Its possible that the petechiae are not caused by bacteria.

A low platelet count is called thrombocytopenia. If the anitbiotics don't work, you may have something called immune thrombocytopenic purpura or ITP. Its a very odd condition that sometimes appears after a cold or flu. Let your doctor know about this if your platelet counts haven't returned to normal levels on your next visit. ITP is not common enough that doctors think of it right away.

I've looked around and can't find exactly how long it takes them to go away. The sites just say, "It goes away with time." Sorry I cannot be of more help.
