YUCK! My cat sprays too and he is also neutered. It is SUCH a problem.
You have some solution. Your cat is probably marking more than you daughters room. Buy the Black lite for urine detection. You can buy when your buy Urine Gone or CAT SPRAY detergents. You use it at night and find the marks. It is WONDERFUL for finding the stuff YUCK!
The reason your cat is spraying is to mark his territory. Try using a damp cloth on your cat. Really rub his face and mouth, make it a little game for the cat. Then take the damp cloth and rub it on your walls. This will transfer his scent onto the wall and make him feel safe. It does not leave a stain or order that humans can detect. You will have to do this once a week to stop the spraying.
You can also try "CALM" products. You buy them at Pet stores like "PetSmart" and "PETCO". "Calm Away" is one of the leading brands. You can buy it as a wall outlet, spray, or powder. This will help in relax in his environment. It works but it takes a while for the cat to get used to it. Just be patient.
You can also talk to your VET about this. Some cats suffer from "Feline Agression". This a very serious problem. MY cat Oliver has it, that is why he sprays. Some cats can be given anti-depressents to correct this problem. This is very serious stuff and MUST ONLY be done under supervised vet care. Talk to your vet about any other symptoms your cat might have such as, biting, hissing, nervousness or territory problems.
The calm away works for me. I buy the outlet brands. We do not smell it at all, but my cat sure does. We also do the damp cloth trick. Oliver now only sprays outside where he really shoud.
Be patient with your cat. I know it is hard, I would like to choke my cat for spraying my FIREPLACE... but I don't. He is only doing what nature tells him to do. he is marking his territory and letting the whole world know that it is his. YEAH US... huh?

A lot of the time cats can spray when they are really scared. Like one time, my black cat Boo was sitting in the family room while I was watching TV. My wacko brother came screaming through the room in an all black ninja uniform pretending to beat the crap out of me, and my cat yowled and darted out of the room screeching like something that was dying. We found him later under my parents bed with an odd smell... xD
Point is, don't scare your jumpy cats.
I second the waterbottle theory. It worked pretty well with mine.
It can also signal health problems, so if it continues contact your vet.

If its a male or female doesn't make a difference (i know you said he's a male) anyway just squirt him w/ a water bottle, or make sure his litter box is always cleaned out!! A not cleaned out litter box is almost always the problem, there are some really picky cats, that if their litter box is not cleaned out, then they're not going to use it and go some where else.

there can be several reasons for this behavior. It could be a urinary tract problem, (like crystals), or have you had another cat in the house? Also, some cats do not like their litter. Have you changed it, or the location of the box lately?
