You need a 1/2 x 3/32 chain to fit a 7 or 8 speed. If you go to Walmart, do NOT get a chain that says 1/2 x 1/8, it will NOT work. I've lost track of the number of people that come into the shop where I work with a Walmart chain only to find out it's the wrong one. It isn't really the customer's fault, they just don't know and there probably isn't anyone working at Walmart who could actually help them get the right one.

Sounds like a simple tension adjustment to the rear derailleur cable. After all - you said you hadn't ridden it in a long time & then started again. Cables do stretch a bit over time. If it's a Shimano rear derailleur - there will be a barrel nut on the derailleur itself. Turn it one turn "Counter Clockwise" & try again. You may have to repeat this process until it's fine tuned down to increments of a quarter turn. If it's a SRAM derailleur - the barrel nut will most likely be close to or on the shifter itself on the handlebar. Same procedure. BTW...look closely on the bike for a warning sticker that states something like, "This bike was not designed for any stunts, jumps, competition or off-road use." Why call it a "mountain bike"?

A bike shop ? Even Walmart sells chains ! You might want to try nashbar.com. They sell bike chains at decent prices. And you'll get your order within a week or two. If you're in a hurry, call your nearest bike shop.
