It's good for you that I also live in mich. and drink whiskey on a budget after seeing the answers above. The best cheap whiskeys in mich. are Canadian whiskeys, Kesslers, Mcmasters, Lord Byrant or Canadian Mist. Evan Williams and Ezra Brooks (nasty) Kentucky's el cheapo are horrible, almost as bad as Beams 8 star. Hope this helps.

I don't know if it's available in the US, but here in Canada, we have a little common whiskey brewed by two guys. The bottles are crudely massed produced with copies of home made labels that look like their drawn with crayons. I forget the names on the bottle but it's a low budget whiskey that's not bad.

Early Times. I'm a cheap whiskey slammer and I love it. And if you mix then whiskey and coke with a slice of lime is the best. Cost me about 2.50 when i go out to the bar

if your on a tight budget and you can handle it grain alcohol is still legal in some states it can be mixed with just about any thing and as long as it is mixed it has virtually no flavor if you drink it straight as the bottle tells you not to it will light you up as it is 180 proof (90%alcohol) ex. everclear, desiel

Gentleman Jack is very nice. And if you like bourbon, Maker's Mark is nice too.
