I have a 97 Ford Explorer and it blows out cold air. I've changed the thermostat and flushed all the hoses, radiator, as well as the hoses to the heater core. There seems to be some type of valve located just before the hoses that go through the firewall to the heater core that opens and closes when the heat is turned on and off; I checked that and it’s working fine. I've also checked the water pump weep hole for leakage and it doesn’t seem to be leaking at all. The only thing I can think of is the heater control itself, because the temperature doesn’t change at all, when I move the dial from hot to cold. Has anyone had any similar problems, or have an idea as to what it could be?

I hate to break the news to you, but you've answered your own question VERY well. Your particular model year of Explorer is extremely well known to have the temperature blend door break. The symptom you describe points EXACTLY to that as being the cause of your problem. Unfortunately, to repair the problem requires removal of the instrument panel assembly to access the heater box assembly. Unfortunately, the blend door itself is not serviced separately, meaning that you will have to purchase an entire heater box assembly from Ford. In this situation, if you want to purchase the part from a salvage yard, it's questionable whether the donor part will be any better quality, since this problem is quite common on '95 to '99 model year Explorers and Rangers. Just ask any Ford Tech. Sorry to hear about your situation.

first off climat controll or not? climate controll useally has deg such as 65 70 75 etc and regular just hot and cold,i believe your prob is inside blender door to be exact, check both hoses to the heater as close to the heater as possible if one is hot and the other is just a little cooler this is normal and you have eliminated the heater core, and also the valve which you have already checked,on the other hand if one is hot and the other is cold you have a blockage somewhere,ok assumeing every thing thus far has checked out ok,lets move on to the blender door, this mixes the cold air from outside with the warm air created by the heater core so that the desired temp can be achived, and guess what if it is stuck in the cold pos.all you will get is cold air, posible causes are many with the two systems, gonna be honest with you climate controll is nice but a pain in the *** to work on,the blender door on climate controll is operated by a electrical motor about the size of a cigarete pack usually on top of the heater box under the dash, lovley place to get to isint it? and it has some sensors that detect the inside air temp that tell it weather its too cold or too hot that could be the prob also a bad sensor, but if you are fortunate and have the other set up just a cable from the controlls to the door and chances are it is either unhooked broke etc, hope this helps and i symphise with your problem been ther and done that

Is the heater control valve moved by cable or is there an electrical controller that actuates it? If at all possible look beneath the dash to look at slider or heat controll button on your dash. You may be able to check the dash switch continuity with a small automotive test light. If it all checks out use your hands to test heater hose temps. with your hands. Grasp the hose going in to the heater core with one hand and hold the water exit hose with the other. They should exactly the same temp..If they are not pull the heater hose lines off the heater core and flush it, both ways. You can think of a way to plumb it up. Reattach and see if it works . Good Luck

Did you flush the heater core yourself or had it done at a rad shop, flushing yourself seldom works. Check to see if the hoses are hot on both sides of the valve and core. I would suspect the core is plugged, expecially if the valve was open when the rad was flushed, debris from the rad gets stuck in the core.

Check That "valve" before the firewall when you turn the heat on, and check position when you turn the heat off. That lever should have moved. If it didn't, then your controller is disconnected and you got to look under the dash to hook it up. That valve lets in/or stops the hot coolant to the heater core.

You will have to determine if it's a cooling system problem or a blend air door concern. I have run into a few of these that have a control problem in the blend door inside the plenum - and it's generally a rather time consuming fix. Can you hear any unusual noises under the dash when you change the selector from hot to cold?

My Taurus did that one time.
I thought oh great, a big time repair.
What it was is a "sticky" knob.
Meaning that the hot/cold knob may simply need turned back and forth a few times.
I hope your solution is the same.
