my income for 2006 was $ 33,458.16.
taxes withheld: federal $ 2,379.60
Masasachsetts: $ 455.71.
married,retired filing separetely, therefore unable to file itemizing deductions...any help will be appreciated

You'll have to prepare your returns to see where you sit. You CAN itemize your deductions if you have sufficient itemizable deductions. If you do, your spouse MUST itemize as well.

If she's already filed using the standard deduction, her tax will be recalculated using either any itemized deductions that she has or a standard deduction of $0. She could wait for the IRS but it would be in her best interest to file an amended return.

If your spouse has already file and itemized, you must itemize also even if you have no itemizable deductions. If you have none, you must take a standard deduction of $0.

As you can see from this, whoever itemizes wins. And it's not down to who filed first -- the one who itemized drives the bus -- so you should coordinate this with your spouse.

Sorry, filing MFS will cause you to owe 'round $990.
MFJ would really help to get you a small refund; Roughly $630 w/o itemizing.
