Go to school for business and start a boutique (online or store or both) on which you sell your designs. Also hook up with local photographers, they may be interested in using your clothing in upcoming shoots. You are gonna really have to work and dont give up. Do you have local television shows that do special segments on upcoming work? Inquire about someone maybe wearing something of yours on air. Know someone who produces zines? Great get them to put you in their zine. The key is exposure. Wear your own designs as often as possible. Join up with already established indie websites that will link and advertise you for free. Go to local crafters shows. Advertise. Make business cards. The more exposure you get, then the more people will see what you have and interest will grow and before you know it you will be going, so I leave you with this..NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK!

Either start out by making your own designs or have someone make your designs. Take your clothes to local consignment shops and see if they will sell your things there. You could also take your clothes to local trendy shops and sell your things there as well. Get a contract if you can, and get these merchants to sign a basic contract allowing you to sell your things there for about a few months if you don't feel very confident or a year if you do. I did this and I was amazed at how many people liked my own personal sense of style. One shop couldn't keep enough of my clothes in it and ran out quickly. Its tough business making a name for yourself because you are always going to have "haters" in this industry, but stick and stay and the rewards will be great. You just have to have you finger on the pulse of the trends and know what is hot! Good luck.

Starting your own clothing line really just requires one thing: money. If you have some to invest yourself, go for it. If not, it is very difficult to get anyone to back you without a background in design or prior experience.

You don't need a degree. What you need is money. Connections wouldn't hurt, either.

You're making this way more complicated than needed. Nail two 2x4s to two trees about 30 feet apart about 6 feet off the ground. Run a rope between them ...........Viola a clothing line. Add 3 more ropes and you now have 4 clothing lines on the same two trees.
