First after college is Medical School. It is 4 years.

Then you have to do residency. Residency varies depending on the type of surgical specialty and institution. Some residency programs will have an additional year of research. The years break down for each about like this:

General Surgery = 5 years

Obstetrics and Gynecology = 4 years

Neurosurgery (Brain Surgery) = 6 to 7 years.

Plastic Surgery = 6 to 7 years

Orthopedic Surgery = 5 years

Otolaryngology (Ear, nose and throat) = 6 years

The following surgical specialties have a 2 to 3 year fellowship AFTER a 5 year general surgery residency:

Trauma
Vascular
Cardiothoracic (open heart)
Pediatric

Good luck... it is a long course to pursue... but I think it's worth it.

Surgeons train for longer than other specialists; only after 9 years of training do they qualify. These years include 4 years of medical school and a minimum of 5 years of residency. in other words it takes you 9 years to be a surgeon ..
