for a simple answer, 1080p and 1080i are both very high resolution screens with very high contrast ratios, but 1080p is a step above 1080i

1080p is 1080 lines -- progressive. So it shows 1080 lines of graphic all at once.

1080i is 1080 interlaced. It shows 540 lines of one frame and 540 of the next all at once.

1080p is higher quality
