7k² + 10k - 100 = 2k² + 55

Bring everything to the left side by subtracting:

7k² + 10k - 100 - 2k² - 55 = 2k² + 55 - 2k² - 55

7k² - 2k² + 10k - 100 - 55 = 0

Simplify:

5k² + 10k - 155 = 0

Factor out a 5:

5(k² + 2k - 31) = 0

Divide both sides by 5:

k² + 2k - 31 = 0

OK I'll do complete the square this time.

k² + 2k - 31 + 31 = 0 + 31

k² + 2k = 31

Then, to complete the square, divide the number in front of k (which is 2) by 2 (2/2 =1 ), square it (1² = 1), and add to both sides:

k² + 2k + 1 = 31 + 1 = 32

Then what is on the left is a perfect square:

(k + 1)² = 32

Take the square root of both sides:

k + 1 = ±√32 = ±√16√2 = ± 4√2

And add 1 to both sides:

k = 1 ± 4√2

Better?
