I am moving to Japan in a year from now. I have a 90 lb Lab/Retriever...how am I going to bring him with me? I won't leave w/out him! I know he can go on the airplane. But its a 14 hour flight..where will he be at? In the luggage storage? Could I possible ship him over by boat? How can I do this? Give me options! Thanks :)

You will need to contact the Japanese equivalent of the Department of Agriculture to check that you are allowed to import an animal, and if so what paperwork is required. If he does go, he will be transported in the luggage hold. Sedation is only a last resort if the animal is extremely stressed, as it will impede the dog's ability to keep itself comfortable in terms of regulating its temperature by moving/shivering. If you shipped him by boat he would have days if not weeks of being cooped up in his crate, with God knows who taking care of him. Please think again about moving or taking the dog, put his welfare first. Also consider the following American Airlines policies, and double check with the proposed airline, as these laws may restrict all airlines.

Long Flight Restriction
Due to USDA regulations, American Airlines is unable to transport warm-blooded animals on flights over 12 hours in length.

Sedation
American Airlines will not accept dogs or cats that have been sedated or given any sort of tranquilizers.

Also read the following webpage, from the Japanese government regarding importing animals from countries where rabies exists. Dogs may be subject to 180 days of quarantine if there is any discrepancy with the paperwork or doubt about their health.

I moved here from Germany in 1989. I brought my German Shepherd with me. You will need a statement from a vet that the dog has had all its vaccinations. Some countries require the animal to be quarantined.. I had to pay a moderate fee for her to be shipped.
My flight was 13 hrs, unfortunately the animal will travel in the cargo departement, and I am sure it is not the most pleasant experience.
I gave my dog a long walk and some water before we boarded, I clamped one of those waterbottles for a rabbit or hamster to the airline approved crate and gave her a mild tranquilizer.
When we finally landed after some unexpected delays I couldn't wait to see her, she was a little upset, but was fine a day or so later.
I would not have left her behind for anything...
Good luck to you and your dog..

First off...naythan's (sp?) answer was funny...period.

You can go to your doctors and get him some doggy downers that will just put him out for a bit. You can give special food/water instructions to the airlines to keep him comfortable. He is kept in the luggage storage.
Shipping him by boat would just take longer than plane.

I'm not sure about Japan but to take an animal to England we had to leave him in quarantine for six months before he could be released to his owners. On airplanes they put them in the cargo area and it is not heated so doing it in the winter is out.
