Each state has 2 reps in the house of representatives, and then they get some by population, and I think the total number gets close to 300.

If you're speaking of the House of Representatives, it's 435. Each state gets a minimum of two, with the number based on population. The more populous a state, the more representatives it gets.
Each state gets two Senators, regardless of size.
