I defintely second the vote on Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks located at 130 Kailua Road on Oahu. I was just there a few weeks ago and they really are great! Since they were slow that day they gave us the local rate and didn't even charge us the normal $3 for the dry bag. (You WILL NEED the dry bag!!!)They'll let you park in their lot and you can bring the kayak down to the beach from their location (it's a 2min walk). You can kayak to the Flat Island or the Mokulua Islands but gotta warn you, it's definitely a workout for the arms!! Flat Island took us about 30 minutes against the wind and we didn't even try to attempt Mokulua. Snorkeling isn't so great on Kailua and Lanikai because the sand is so fine that the waves tend to kick it up a bit and obscure visibility. They also have those eco-tours if you don't want to go it alone. If you can't get the local rate remember to pick up those touristy brochures for coupons. They're everywhere in Honolulu.
The brochures also had another place called Two Good Kayaks located on 345 Hahani Street. I believe there was a coupon for 15% off or something similar. Not sure how good they are but thought you might some choices.
For snorkeling we rented equipment for a week from Snorkel Bob. They have different levels depending on the quality of snorkel, mask, and fin you want. You can find them at www.snorkelbob.com but we didn't make reservations and got rentals day of. We got the the Split Level package and upgraded to the dry snorkel for about $30 for the whole week. They let you use the mask cleaner and give you tips on where to go snorkeling as well. They have a convenient drop box in case you have to return the gear when they aren't open.
We went to Hanauma Bay first and it definitely is one of those places you have to go at least once. Given it is a bit touristy but it's worth it. We also went to Sans Souci off of the main Honolulu drag and they had a nice variety of fish as well. We didn't brave the North or West sides since the waves are huge this time of year but the summers are most likely tamer.

First things first. Rent the equipment in Hawaii. I am assuming that you are connected with or are visiting someone associated with the military. If so they will have the connections for equipment and/or kayak rental. If not don't worry about it. There are hundreds of places to rent. There is no one perfect place to snorkel. One word of caution. A lot of people will tell you that Hanauma Bay is the best place to go. That used to be true, but not any more. You will see a lot of fish looking for hand-outs but no tropical fish. Rely on existing companies in Hawaii. You can look at the following sites and get far more information than I can give;
http://www.sailhawaii.com/snorkel.html
http://www.hawaiidiscount.com/Oahu/Snorkeling/
www.sailhawaii.com/snorkel.html
www.sailhawaii.com/snorkel.html
When you land at the airport, on your way to baggage claim, and on almost every street corner you will see racks of tourist magazines. There are a lot of discount coupons in them. If you are staying in any of the hotels, the front desk will have the magazines along with suggestions for you.
Have fun Hawaii is a wonderful place to visit.

You can go to Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks, www.kailuasailboards.com , and they are a GREAT company! They offer both a guided and a self-guided tour which will take you to Mokolua Island off of Kailua/Lani Kai Beach. Also if you want to go to the sand bar in Kaneohe, Captain Bob's has a sailing tour which will take you there via glass-bottom boat and they provide a B-B-Q lunch and all the snorkel equipment as well.

Kailua Beach, which is one of my favorites. I lived in Oahu for 2 years, just got back, and everyone I showed around the island, said that Kailua was there favorite. Kayakin is perfect there, little islands right off shore you can kayak to.

At Hanauma Bay, stay interior of one hundred ft of the sea coast. At Kailua sea coast, there are strong currents. in case you promote off the kayak, you would possibly want to flow a lengthy distance earlier someone might want to get to you. i might want to say you should stay interior of 50 ft of shore there.
