I had older toyotas with 31 inch tires, it takes away from the power a bit but never had any problems oyher than that, had 35" tires...never damaged the truck but 5th gear was pretty much useless with the stock gearing.

If you want to keep the 31's with your toyo, here is what you do...
Get a decent lift for the truck...no AutoZone special...all the cheap stuff will do is tear up suspension parts and weaken your overall suspension capability.
Change out the differential gears in your axles to match or slightly change the gear ratio to your tires. Say if you had 25" stock tires with a 3.07 gear, and you went to a 37" tire, you would probably step up to a 4.56 gear for the best off-road performance.
Increase the gearing proportionally as best as you can though, or things could start looking funny. This will help save your clutch (if you drive a stick) or clutch discs (if you drive an automatic tranny). They will burn up clutches about every six months if the gears aren't changed out...
Hope that helps...

Over sized tires rob power and gas mileage. They do look nice and ride a little better and are real doggie.

i have an 87 pickup that has the same size tires on it (bf goodrich all terrains). i have absolutely no trouble, other than it doesn't have as much power as i want. it's got a 22R motor (carbureted 4 cyl).
