"Mormons" are patrons of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints".

They follow The Bible, but believe that Jesus Christ (after resurrection) visited North America, long ago, and that refugees Jews migrated to North America, establishing civilization over time. They believe that the Native American tribes were descended from these refugee Jews, and that an extensive history of kings, wars, and the rise and fall of great nations took place long before English, Spanish, or any other European explorers came to North America.

They believe that Jesus Christ had additional teachings given in this other time and place, and consider it a second testament of Christ, or a second *gospel* if you will. This is also where the term "latter-day saints" comes from, as these events occur at a later time from the last events in The Bible.

The Book of Mormon are writings by Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) who claimed he was led by an angel to find a handful of metal plates. On these plates was the engraved history of the events of North America and Jesus Christ's appearance there, written in a lost language. The Mormons believe that this man was led to these plates, and then given the power by God to translate them, thus revealing the ancient North American history and presence of Jesus Christ, as well as his other teachings not seen in the original Holy Land.

The rest of the belief (by Mormons) is that the angel returned, and took back the plates. While they are not present to prove any of this, The LDS Church claims there is a document signed by a number of witnesses, attesting to the existence of those plates at the time, including descriptions of their nature.

The term "Mormon" is taken from a prophet named Mormon as desceribed in the metal plates.

The Catholic Church, and most protestant "Christian" churches feel this is blasphemy, since there are specific passages in The Bible that essentially say The Bible is a complete work, and any attempts to alter or add to it are to be considered the trick and manipulation of Satan (this is not word-for-word). Also, since the metal plates that the LDS "history" is based on have been in their belief taken back by God himself, there exists no *physical* proof, whereas much of Biblical description can be found in the form of artifacts, including ancient original documents now kept in thousands of museums and universities around the world. In the eyes of Catholic and other Christian parishners, this is more than enough to invalidate the Mormon faith.

Mormons have some basic rules they follow, known as "The Articles of Faith":
The Articles of Faith are:

1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

3. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.

6. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

7. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

8. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

9. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

10. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

11. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

12. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

I hope this has been of some help. Wikipedia has more information if you require it, as does the official LDS site.

Starting with the basics, I would say that we believe in God the Eternal Father. We also would call Him our Heavenly Father. We believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Redeemer and Savior of Mankind. We also believe that the Holy Ghost testifies of truth, and that all three of these individuals make the Godhead. We believe that Jesus Christ created the world under the direction of God the Father. We believe that God called righteous men throughout the ages to testify of Him, and they are called prophets. We believe that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary and that the Atonement of Jesus Christ - where He suffered the sins and pains of the world and then was crucified in Calvary/Golgotha to be resurrected on the third day afterward - is the central event in all of the world's history. We believe in a living prophet today, Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley, and we believe that 12 Apostles exist today, who also have the same calling and authority of the 12 Apostles who existed in the Church of Jesus Christ of ancient times. We believe that God spoke to prophets in the Old World and the New World. The prophets in the Old World wrote the records which eventually were compiled into the Bible. The prophets in the New World, who came from the Old World around 600 B.C., also wrote the Gospel (the same Gospel) and those records have been compiled into the Book of Mormon. With two books of scripture we feel sure that true prophets will always testify of Jesus Christ and His divine mission to redeem all who will come to Him and repent of their sins. We believe in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, which is in the future and probably in your lifetime. Someone already mentioned www.lds.org which is a great website. Have a happy day, and I send you a gummy bear.

Your best recourse is to log on to www.lds.org. There, you will find the scriptures, the Articles of Faith that the Mormon Church subscribes to, and answers to common questions.

I could start with an explanation from here, but lds.org is more comprehensive and doesn't leave anything in doubt. It is the official website for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Log on to it now.
