I am trying to stop smoking without buying Nicorette or Commit. Does anyone know of anything that can help?

I'm in the same boat you are. What those pamphlets tell you is to recognize the triggers that make you want a cigarette. Big ones are being in the car and after meals for me. So I started by not smoking while driving, helped me cut down considerably. Now I'm working on the post-meal cigarette. So far I've come down from a pack a day to about a pack every 3-4 days. I guess the idea for me now is to pick a date on when I'm going to quit and stick to it.

Also try convincing yourself that cigarettes taste gross. That worked well for a friend of mine (but she also found out she was pregnant, so that helped a bit too!)

I also find that taking quick, sharp breaths when I feel a cigarette craving coming on help out a lot! I think it mimics the inhalation process of smoking (duh, because I AM inhaling...)

You can try thinking of the money and the health issues, but I never had any luck with them. I could always find a way to justify the need to buy another pack, and if I was that worried about the health issues (I know, I should be) I'd have quit already, or never started in the first place.

I also found that I had greater success if I kept it to myself that I was trying to quit. Typically I guess you're supposed to tell everyone so you feel obligated to quit, but then I just felt like I was letting everyone down if I caved in, and that made me want to smoke more.

Obviously, you'll have to figure out what works best for you. Just don't give up!

Good luck to you!!!! :-D

I say the best way to quit anything is cold turkey. Just give it up and you will forget it forever. I mean, I have never smoked, but I know I cant just give up on chocolate. Then again, chocolate doesnt give me life threatening diseases like emphazema, lung cancer, cancer of the throat, tooth decay, gingivitis, and I could go on and on. So if chocolate did all of those things and more, I would quit cold turkey. Can you?

P.S- If it helps, try eating some chocolate to quit the craving. LOL!

Nothign really worked for me until i REALLY wanted to quit adn then I just did it codl turkey from 3 1/2 packs a day.
If you really want to quit, either something will help or you will find the strength to do it on your own. It's not easy but you can do it if you feel strongly enough about it. Do let those you care about know first what's going on so they will understadn your moodiness and be able to support you. That's going to be the most important thing for you to have IMO

Good luck!

I'm also trying to quit smoking. My best tip: keep as much sugar-free candy and gum on your person as you can. It helps a lot to have something to put in your mouth when a cigarette craving hits.

If you have any triggers (for me, alcohal and caffeine always make me want to smoke), try avoiding them as well.

Think about the all of the taxes that the government is trying to impose on cigarettes.

Then imagine how much money you would save a month/year if you weren't a smoker.

Good luck.

Make a plan, and slowly limit yourself. Like, for the first week, have one less than you usually do, mark it down on your calander. It would be easier if you had someone help you.

They have new medication out now. It is soppose to get rid of "all" your withdrawal symptoms. My doctor gave me script for it, but I'm just not ready yet. Call your doctor and ask for it. It is soppose to be very helpful.
