Soldiers started out carrying the M-14. Then switched to the M-16A1. M-16 was lighter but had numerous problems in the begining with jamming. Finnaly got it right after about 10 years.
CIA most likely used the AK47. That way if the weapon was found, it didn't point towards the US. AK47 is very dependable and is the same weapon the North used.

The M-16 was standard issue for infantrymen. The CIA used several silenced sniper rifles -- especially the M-1 .30 caliber carbine and Springfield M1903A4 -- through the late 1960s. Also, the CIA oversaw the issuance of M-16s to South Vietnamese forces.

M16A1 "You can tell it's Matell, it's swell!!!" Common phrase used to describe the toy-like appearance of the M-16 due to many plastic parts. It replaced the M-14 which was heavier and fired a 7.62 round. The M-16 fired a 5.56 round. 14 was heavier but had longer range and was more accurate. 16 , while lighter, had shorter range and chewed up ammo fast. The m16A1 did, i believe, have a full auto setting. It is the M16A2 that has a 3 round burst. Hope this helps

They used m-14, but then defense department switched to m-16. The difference was 14 had a fully automatic setting while the 16 had only 3 round burst. They did this to aid in ammunition conservation.

The M-16 was probably the most common, then the geriatric M-1.
Don't know about the CIA...

A Marine freind of mine said he used the M 14. As squidly leu points out, the M 16 back then was still new and had a lot of bugs to work out of it. God Bless you.
