I am looking for an over under double gun in 20 gauge for my girlfriend to shoot skeet. I specifically don't want an auto gun though it may well be suitable, nor do I want anything with plastic furniture...so, first hand experience preferred, what's the best gun under $1000?

I would go with the Ruger Red Label, I my self will have one very soon.

Now if there was ever a sexy gun this is it!
It comes in 12, 20 and 28 gauge.

The Ruger Red Label is the equal of any Euro o/u, plus you have the advantage of Ruger being an American manufacturer. American tech support. American parts supply. It's an American Classic.
When the name on the gun is Ruger, quality ceases to be a concern. The quality goes in before the name goes on.
Performance? Proven. Period.
Appearance? B-eautiful.Oiled Walnut and Deep polished blue.(It don't get no better than that!)
Ruger supports the NRA and SSF.... And your rights.
Support them right back.

Look at CZ. They have a nice line of O/Us starting at around $650, and ranging to $1200. If she is new to the sport, and you're not sure she's gonna get into it, look at the Remington Spartan. It's not a bad looking gun, and you can get into one for under $500. If she wants something better later, trade up.

check Baikal. it has a single select trigger, turkish walnut stock and five choke tubes. It was once imported by EAA but is now called a Remington Spartan. If you can find one imported by EAA it'll save you a couple of hundred bucks. They are made in Baikal Russia and shouldn't be more than five hundred bucks.
