Don't switch him all at once. Do it on a gradual basis, about 1/8 cup at a time till you are giving him all of the new food. If you give him treats, put some in the treat can, shake the can and try that, however some cats are too smart to be fooled.

You could mix the diet with regular but when we tried that with my cat he just ate around the diet food.

You can try that, or, what might work is smothering the cat food in something they would like such as milk, butter, juice that you cooked meat in, ect. Gradually decrease the amount you put on until he's able to eat it without any extra stuff.

Well the first thing is how much to you feed him? If more than one to two times a day I would cut back on his feedings. That might help. Or you can add a little bit of chicken, any kind of fish or beef stock or juices to his food. But I would only give him enough to flavor a tiny bit. The problem may be that he doesn't like the way the food tastes.

gradually add new food with the old food. Trick them. Think of it this way you will be saving his life. My poor cat was just diagnosed with Diabetes. Now I have to give her a shot every morning and night... not fun. Diet always helps.

Why would your cat be able to "run away"? You aren't letting him outside, are you? http://www.hsus.org/press_and_publications/humane_society_magazines_and_newsletters/all_animals/volume_4_issue_1_spring_2002/a_safe_cat_is_a_happy_cat_and_your_cat_is_only_safe_indoors.html

As far as the "diet" food, gradually introduce it. If he still doesn't like it, switch to a different brand and try again.

Gradually add diet foot into his normal food, increasing it daily, sooner or later he will get used to it. Good luck! :)

When my kitty gets finicky, I sprinkle a pinch of catnip on his food. I also give him Kittyvite (vitamins from Petsmart).

You could try mixing it half and half with his old food, if you still have some of that.

If not, just wait. He'll eat when he gets hungry enough.

Good luck!
