I've browsed a few dating sites myself & actually made contact with a few women. But I wasn't looking for anything serious, so it never went anywhere.
You can & will meet people on dating sites. But even the best of them cannot guarantee that you'll find your perfect match. This is because there are just too many variables in human relationships. On the other hand, I know some happy couples who met on-line.
Any reputable dating website will have safety measures in place which will allow you to contact people through the site without revealing your personal info. A good idea in this day & age - There are a lot of sickos who browse the dating sites.
I think Match.com & Yahoo personals work as good as any. E Harmony also works. (One of the couples I referred to above met on E Harmony.) But again, none of them can guarantee how any relationship will turn out.
And yes, most websites will allow you to browse for free, but will probably charge a fee if you actually want to make contact with people.
I've included a link to a Google Search for online dating. You have a lot of choices, to say the least. Good luck.

Try a free dating site that offers a different angle to online dating. Best is FriendFin dating site. It is completely free. A lot of people say they met their gf/bf through another friend. FriendFin helps you do that.

Well, a single person browsing never hurts, but it could certainly stir up some excitement in your life. The cool thing about Match.com is that once you've created a profile, you can hide it but still "look at the menu", so to speak. That part is free. The trouble with Match comes when your profile is public, and some guy sends you an email. You don't get to find out who sent you the message unless you are a paying member. You can send and receive winks, but you have to pay to have real conversations with people on there. Also, Match has little privacy when your profile is public; any paying member whose profile you view will know you viewed them. If you want to be anonymous, you have to keep your profile hidden.

As far as eHarmony is concerned, I never used it but have a friend who did, met a guy, and it didn't work out. She's now using Match, and has gone on maybe one or two dates. So, as far as your question of these sites "working" or not, it's all relative to your personal expectations.

Anyway, it's always fun to browse on those sites, and maybe flirt a lil.

You can browse Yahoo Personals. You can look at pictures and a few profiles then they want you to sign up. Also you have to sign up to talk to anybody. I was browsing one day not really looking just curious and saw the profile of the man I'm about to marry in 2 months. I kept seeing his picture and found him attractive so I spent the 20 dollars to sign up just so I could talk to him that was almost 3 years ago. If I had to do it again I would go to Yahoo Personals it was a good experience for me. Also My brother met his girlfriend that way.

They all work, but of course, there not free. Your interest and ease of use is how you determine if you like the site or not. No one on a dating site is usually whom you expect them to be. Unfortunately, that's the way it is.Think of it as a TV commercial, and you are trying to sell IHOP pancakes. Some commercials appeal, most do not. No one wants to sell them self short of who they think they are. Yahoo personals work best for me.I meet allot of Ladies, and 90% I wish I didn't. Try "plenty of fish". Free and easy to use.

my advice- try telephone dating, many are free for women and you get to know someone for who they are, not for what they look like. I think many people have profiles on dating sites for the heck of it, whereas telephone dating is more serious, people actually have to put in the work. I met my fiancee on there and I was looking for someone to settle down with. I got what i was looking for, but if I had been looking for something casual, I could have found that too.

I have a friend who really wants to date and has been on eharmony for about six months. She hasn't gotten a date yet and is really frustrated.
