1. Get therapy. Seriously. It does work. Been there done that.

2. Get a physical, make sure you're healthy.

3. If, after working w/ a therapist and your doctor, you determine that drugs would be helpful, take them. Depression can be biological in nature, but most often it is situational.

4. Exercise. I can't tell you how much hurt / rage / depression that have been translated into miles on my bicycle.

5. Actually accomplish things. We used to think that a good self esteem would lead to great accomplishments, but we now know that the opposite is true (as did our grandparents).

Become adequate.

No, not kidding. Look at your life and see where you feel you are underperfoming. If you don't feel that youre very manly, got do something difficult and manly. If you don't feel that you are very attractive go hit the gym till you have cuties dripping off you. If you don't feel you are making enough money, go get a second job.

Your feelings are supposed to tell you things... they are sort of like the "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" as you drive though life. So go check the engine and FIX what is wrong... don't just take a pill or whine to a shrink about your feelings. Find out why you feel the way you do (a shrink might be good for that, if you really need one) and then go fix the problem.

Yeah, it's hard work. But all things considered it is easer than spending 15 years of your life depressed and inadequate. Yeah it may take a while to see any progress, but during that time focus on the fact you are FINALLY taking steps to solve this problem.

And before you say "Oh I could never do...." just think... if you REALLY couldn't do it, you wouldn't be feeling down on yourself for not doing it now would you?

Good luck!

If you've felt this way for 15 years, you may need medication. You should also talk this out with a therapist. Given the length of time you have felt this way, you may have a chemical inbalance in your brain and medication may be the only solution. However, there could also be a reason you feel this way that relates to something that happened to you at a young age that you have repressed, so that should be explored with a psychologist or a licensed therapist. Good luck. Life does not have to be like that for you. Help is available, I just cannot tell you what you need--except an analysis by a professional.

Have you tried taking antidepressants? This is not the answer for everybody. There are all-natural herbal remedies as well. For example, St. John's Wort. But if you want to go the standard medical route, have you tried Cymbalta? Also you could start playing a musical instrument. Some people have benefited greatly from that. For example, the saxophone, flute, tuba, cello, guitar, drums, etc. Getting more sunlight, go out to the park on your lunch break. They even have what's called "light therapy" to treat depression with light. Amazing effect on the brain/mind/body!!
