finally exploding in anger because of pent up frustration said," Consider putting out what you're feeling in simple honesty. As Jesus put it," "Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and you 'No,' 'No,'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. Matt 5:37"

Do you agree with this author's use of scripture to make his point? Why or why not?(essay question)

Perhaps you should do your own homework, but I will attempt to give you an answer.

on one hand, he seems to be taking it slightly out of context, since Jesus was really talking about avoiding taking oaths (since the future is hard to predict, we should not swear that we are going to do something unless we are really, really sure that we can follow through).

But, I suppose that in a general sense that Jesus was talking about honesty, so I suppose that if the counselor was expounding on Jesus' broader implied meaning, then perhaps the counselor was correct after all (but I am not a big fan of "implied meaning" since it is too easy to read things into the passage that isn't really there).

I hope that helps.

No...I believe the point of scripture had nothing to do with that but rather trying to be persuasive with many words, particularly swearing. Heaven is Gods throne and the earth is his footstool...I think the author altogether missed the point.
