My family has recently brought to my attention that they believe, that I may have a depression problem. I'm not exactly sure what depression is or feels like, but i'm willing to go with the idea. What does extreme depression look like, feel like and sound like because they say i've got it bad.

Yes, I do honestly sleep alot something like 10 hours out of the day. I eat what I believe is a healthy meal, but they disagree i'm 6 foot 2 inches tall and weight about 270. I don't get excited about much of anyhting yet, i'm constantly pissed at everything. I really find no joy other than from my wife. I feel as if i'm going to burst.

Depression is a term used for any number of depressive disorders (Seasonal Affective Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Postpartum Depression, bipolar disorders, etc.) It can manifest as many different symptoms but some symptoms are a change in sleep pattern, eating habits, sudden disinterest in things you used to enjoy. You may keep functioning at 'normal', but just don't feel energetic or happy. It can affect your concentration and make decisions difficult. You may have feelings of guilt, worthlessness, pessimism, anxiety, empty, or feel restless or irritable.

Does this sound at all familiar? If it does, it's worth a trip to a health care professional. Check out the NIMH website for more info. Best of luck.

well, from the last time I've checked my medical book, there are three forms of depression, there is the mild case, which can be temporary or permanent. The symptoms are fatigueness, slowness and slurring of speech, change in eating habits, loss or gaining of weight, and being anti-social. There is also seasonal depression, which includes the same symptoms as the mild case, however, they only occur on certain occasions. Than there is the extreme case, which includes bi-polar depression.

Here is a link.... It's not lontg - please click it. http://www.nimh.nih.gov/healthinformation/depressionmenu.cfm
It includes this checklist:
Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed

Please listen to your family. I did. I "thought" I was fine, but had a very hard time after the murder of someone in my family. Your family doctor can prescribe a medication or you can see a counsellor (some do both).

Depression isn't "in your head" - it's a chemical imbalance that can be straightened out. Life is to short to go around feeling like you do now. At least try the option of talking to your doctor about it. You have nothing to lose.

If you need help, you may not realise it. You will feel much better after treatment though. You won't realize how depressed you really are(or were) till after you start feeling better.
I have suffered form this. It's not a shame to get help. I am now happy and not taking any meds or counseling. Sometimes you don't even know what is bothering you till you go for treatment. Trained individuals will help you and NOT think you are stupid or anything. Be honest with them and yourself.

Do you often feel hopeless? Do you want to sleep all the time? Do you feel there is no point to life? Are you frequently sad?

If you answered yes to these questions - these are symptoms of depression.

Do you find joy in anything?

If your answer is no - this is another symptom of depression.

have you ever thought of giving meditation a chance? If you meditate, you'll be able to find the peace within.
