"The soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul." >> Heck maybe poor Jonathan felt the same way as the Bible, that David was such a hottie who "had beautiful eyes, and was handsome." ???

They were lovers - even Saul tacitly acknowledged that, if any of the recorded history is true, when he suggests he will have TWO holds on David if David marries his daughter -- but there are other signs. When they snuck to see each other, they embraced together until they exceeded. Modern language "transliterations" of the text reduce that to weeping until they recovered themselves or some such nonsense -- but the only actual copies we have of the original rather strongly suggest a different type of "exceeding" than tears. Likewise, when Jonathan was killed in the war, David wept and said "Oh my brother Jonathan whom I loved with a love greater than that I had for women." I would offer money that if we ever could actually see the historic figures (if there were historic figures behind the myth) we would find that they were lovers. To this day in similar cultures gay men marry preforce, but they love each other. It's a sad story really.

Well, Slate hardly has a pro-biblical outlook.

Even today, Middle Easterners kiss each other when they meet. It is akin to the Western handshake, nothing more - nothing less.

Only the most jaded would look at this in a sexual way.

It's called friendship, only a perverted heart would cause one to think otherwise.

They were best friends. In many cultures it is a custom to kiss your friends. Quit making ridiculous implications.
