It seems to me that taking the Lord's name in vain bit was literal, kind of like Nacissus bragging that he was more beautiful than Aphrodite. So if God says that judging people after dead is His job, then why is it that so many people are eager to ursurp His position and be so judgemental "for God?" Isn't that just saying you know better than God what decisions will be made? Sounds like the ultimate in vanity to me.

Anyhow, it never made much sense to me that people interpreted it as people would go to hell if someone said "Jesus Christ!" because they were upset... It's not like the Greek word translates into that sort of English meaning of "vain" right? So what's up with the translation that "taking the Lord's name in vain" means saying "Oh, God!" at random moments?

warlord46750 makes a good point of clarification: I'm not talking about someone saying, "Well, I think you're a dork or an idiot," but really ursurping God's role of FINAL judgement and telling people whether or not they will be going to hell. I'm not saying reading Bible verses about it would be wrong - otherwise you'd be pretty messed over, huh? Instead, I'm just saying people that insist someone is going to hell are committing a sin against one of the 10 commandments - kind of like the opposite of "love thy neighbor" because I never really thought "love thy neighbor" meant "condemn thy neighbor to hell." Maybe I'm wrong, but the two sound like polar opposites to me...

Dear "You Hate Me,"
I don't hate you. I just think you're trying too hard to get banned from Y!A. I met another guy like that that had a different schtick to wave about. Why would I ban you? You make me look even better than I already am! Why, it's goofy people like you that make this so entertaining for me! My whole joke is "sheesh, will you look at these biggots?" Now would I have you to kick around if I banned you?

On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if some honest Christians asked to have you banned for being a lousy representative of their beliefs. That's their perogative. Anyhow, just being honest. P.s. Nice flag. Is that just to help everyone hate you better too?

In Judaism there is a belief that words are powerful and can have significant effects, this may be the origin of this commandment.

I think you're thinking too much, lol. I get what you're saying, people aren't supposed to be judgmental, but I've never met anybody who hasn't passed judgment on someone. Now telling someone to go to hell, is a pretty harsh statement, when taken literately. Now it's more of a cliche, and nobody thinks twice about saying it or being told it. Although, your position taken literately, yes I think it could be interpreted that way, in a very round about way, so yes.

it's blasphemy, i think, but not taking god's name in vain.

unless you say "god damn you", some sects consider that taking god's name in vain.

Others say the 2nd commandment only means don't use God's name in an oath you don't intend to keep. Like when you're in court swearing on the Bible and you say "so help me God". If you don't plan to tell the truth, you've broken the 2nd commandment (and in that case, most likely the "false witness" one as well.)

Nope!

They just like to say it to you to piss you off and have you go crying to YA.

"DearYahoo,

So and so told me that I was going to go to Hell because I was making fun of their beliefs......boo...hoo.hoo."

Yahoo's reply- That's alright little girl/boy we'll punish them by taking away some of their points, will that make you feel better?

Poor little heathens, they have it so hard.

They get on YA and poke fun at peoples' beliefs and when somebody comes along and gives them what for then they get upset and go crying to YA because they feel that they have the right to make fun of other people and their beliefs all they want to but feels that it isn't right for someone to confront them and stand up to them for what they believe in.

I'm not sure if it's taking the lord's name in vain or not but I do know that it's condescending, arrogant, judgmental and just plain rude.
