Hi Cindy...urine spraying usually is when a cat sprays horizontally while standing wiggling the tail straight upwards, however some male cats will urine spray while squatting so it all depends on the cat itself. Cats over the age of 5-7 months will reach sexual maturity and being urine spraying to mark territory. Neutering should be done soon as possible so this doesn't become habitual as it can be difficult to stop long after a neuter.

I've found that females TEND to be more particular about whatever is their "trigger" while males tend to be more laid back. That's very generic, because the females have been bothered by everything from humans to other cats to dust while some of the males haven't really been people cats and others have been the biggest sucks ever. I like to look mostly at the other sex when I'm adding to a family with an already existing cat, but that's not always necessary or specific. Really, the best thing to do is go for the cat, not the sex. They've both got generalized benefits and downfalls but not all cats will fit into those generalizations.

urinating or spraying, the stuff is the same - cat urine. When a cat sprays, he usually does it standing and sprays urine against a vertical surface or object like a wall or plant or peice of furniture. When he urinates only, he "squats" with his bum very close to the ground (or litter). Sometimes, when a cat is frightened, excited or wants you to put him down, he'll void his bladder (urinate) or worse, void his colon (poop). I think they know that if they pee or poop on you you'd release your hold on them. And they're right... right?

In short.... No, your cat was not marking you. he was telling you, "Let go of me." Silly kitty. Have him fixed. He'll get better.

i don't believe there is much of a difference. When a cat marks their territory it is still coming from the same place so i thinks it's still pee. Our cat used pee and poop to mark his territory so thats why i don't think there is a difference.
