i have naturally wavy & frizzy hair. its layered & only goes a little bit past my shoulders. i relax and also color my hair. if i dont straighten it or blow dry it, it gets poofy; although i know that straightening and blow drying it is bad especially since i am trying to grow it out. does anyone have any suggestions about what i could do?

curl it. like my hair is exactly like yours so what i do is i curl the bottom layers out(away from my face) and the curl the top layer in. it looks cute.

My hair is the same and what I do is when I wash and condition it, I rinse just enough of the conditioner out so that my hair doesn't look white like it has conditioner in it...this helps it to lay better and just squeeze it in the shower to get excess water out or use a diffuser so your scalp dries and so your hair isn't not dripping wet and use mousse too. Leave a towel drapped around your shoulders for like 1/2 hr to soak up some of the water...Try this when you don't have to leave the house for a couple of hours so you won't get sick and just to see if you like the results. Leave in conditioner is good too, but the more you go touching in your hair and seperating it the more poofy it'll be. I also advise you to look up the effects on the hair cuticle of leaving conditioner on it like that, I read somewhere that it wasn't good for your hair, but I do it and my hair is past the middle of my back, and hair stylist always say how healthy it is...ask a professional about leaving most of the conditioner in.

Also you said you color and relax your hair, the poof and frizz could be due to damage, it could be dried out...get some moisture products ASAP. Conditioners, sprays, ect. There is this stuff called cholesterol and it works like a dream! If you have the type of hair where you can use a relaxer, the cholesterol should be good for you too. It leaves your hair silky and it feels like there is something on it, it makes hair so smooth and soft and best of all your hair won't be all greasy feeling. Now if you use that stuff rinse it all out completely. I use that when I am going to blow dry and straighten my hair.

Use a couple of drops of 100% Jojoba oil on your hair when your hair is wet and then style it. This helps a lot in maintaining the moisture in your hair and keeping your hair healthy.

try using a straightener with caramic plates, that will cut down on the brakage of your tips. also try using starightening balm or leave in conditioner so that it's directly heating your hair, end with polishing shine or spray. trust me it works i have very curly hair because of an old perm and i straighten my hair constently!!!

I have the type of curly hair that Just gets frizzy if you do anything else besides this.
