I used to get them all the time. I got a serious spanking when I hit my kindergardten teacher.

Growing up during the 70's and 80's, I not only recieved spankings from my parents but from teachers and adults as well.

My parents used a belt for a short time with me, then it evolved to the wooden spoon as my sister grew older. Spankings were usually given when one of us did something wrong such as lying, hitting a sibling, defying my parents, breaking lamps or tools, and so on. Typical kid stuff. Grounding was worse for me, since I had so much energy and wanted to go out and play or be with my friends building forts, soapbox cars, or WW II models.

Teachers would use a wooden paddle. Some of them had names, some had holes to improve the "aerodyanmics", or some were taped for an extra sting. These were given for cheating, talking out of turn, being a smart mouth, playing bloody knuckles with the old, large Goody combs, spitwads, and I even had a teacher would paddled you for laughing outloud in class.

After awhile, some kids (including myself) would ask to use the restroom before the paddling happened. So as you were in the stall "going potty", stuff half a roll of TP in your underwear and go back for the paddling.

Adults who were not my teachers or parents, would either smack my head with an open hand, pop my nose with a jab, or get very aggressive in my face if I were to ever smart off to them in public. For those of you who are over 30, having tweens and teens smart off to you or try to boss you, can have a grating affect with their audacity, can understand this.

However, now that the liberal whiners have come into play, they call this abuse. Thanks to these people who made spanking a form of physical abuse, parents and teachers are forced to use words to express their discontent with their children's behaviour.

Kids simply will walk all over a parent, teacher, or adult because the kids just don't care. Yelling is yelling. Give them the fear of God that you are going to spank them so hard they'll feel it last week and they really think twice about their action (unless the kid(s) are just incredibly stupid.

However, any adult punching, kicking, or clobbering a kid as an adult is being physically abusive.

Yeah but not all that often. But then again I was fairly well-behaved and respectful and all ... I was more likely to get a lecture, or get something taken away (no TV or video games for a week or month or whatever).

My parents were, for the most part, very nice. I was more likely to try to do the right thing because I loved them, not because I was afraid of getting spanked. But even good kids mess up sometimes and (within reason) it's up to their parents how to deal with it.

yes i did get spankings as a child. and yes at the time i didnt like my parents for doing it. but looking back i just c that was their way of getting thru my thick skull. i think that to a point its still a good thing. like mostly everything else theres a very thin line to cross before it goes bad.

hang in there all will work out in the end i promise

Yes, I got spankings. It seems like the spankings were more of a way for my father to relieve his anger than a way to discipline me. He delighted in folding his belt in half and snapping it to frighten me.

Now I have to work very, very hard to not just smack my child when I'm angry with him. It's hard. However, he seems to respond better to discipline when it isn't physical or violent. It's also the case that I shouldn't be taking out my anger on a child.

I was spanked as a child I only remember one of them-the time I didnt do what my Aunt thought I did. She raised me and did not spare the rod (but she never used a rod just her hand).

Yup, and after the first couple times it only took the threat of getting one or the count to 3 that would make me behave cuz i knew i didnt want a spanking!!! My children will get the same thing!

IMo actual violence is a bad style of punishment for babies. My determine took away the failings i admire as quickly as I didnt behave like my video games, television and different privileges. So i grew to become into quite obedient.

Yes I did and I learned how to fear and resent my father and later on how not to have any respect for him as well. It doesn't take much intelligence to hit a child Apes hit their offspring all the time. I never resorted to physical violence with my own daughter and she grew up being better behaved than I was and consequently grew up respecting me rather than fearing and rensenting me. Case in point. I left home before my 17th birthday...she is now my "room mate" and she is 21.
