That would depend upon the level of friendship you have with the person. It's always best to ask before delving into areas where guests are not normally invited.

Depends on whether you mean ask every visit or ask once... at some good friends places I know they prefer me getting my own drink, so I don't ask again every time -in fact that'd be rude and insecure. But yes, at some point of time I still asked (or maybe they volunteered the information), it'd be rude to open a fridge or really any cabinet or closet if it's never come up yet! The answer & your level at comfort in their home will then determine whether it carries over to the next visit or not.

Ye, but it is also rude not to make sure your guest are well taken care of so they don't feel the need to open the fridge with out asking.

Yes, it is rude. However, I have been in homes where the family is very relaxed about formalities. Everyone, including guests, helped themselves to refreshments and food. (Think, Kramer on Seinfeld) If someone grows up in that environment, they may not know that it is rude. I wasn't raised this way, and we were taught that it is impolite to help yourself to anything that you were not first offered. If you are in a home that is very informal, then the "When in Rome" rule applies. Otherwise, be polite, and stay out of the fridge.

Yes, it is rude. Especially, if you have never been to there house before. And even if you have unless they have given you an open invite in the past then never do so with out an invite or with out asking them first. It is very rude with out doing so.

Always ask. Always always always. Even if it's ok for that person to just walk into your home and get something from the fridge. Until that person says, "Why are you asking? Make yourself at home!" you are obliged to ask each and every time.

It depends on the person & your relationship with them. If your really close like my 2 best girl friends, then no because my home is their home when they're here. I don't consider them guests. But if you are a guest in someones home, I would say it's poite to ask & then if they say Oh you don't need to ask, then fine but if they don't, you ask everytime.
