I heard someone say it is not too rare for someone to die or become badly injured during the process. Is this true?

you just need to find a good maxillofacial surgeon. they're the guys that specialize in removing wisdom teeth. I'm allergic to novocaine and all the numbing meds. so when I needed my wisdom teeth removed my dentist sent me to a maxillofacial surgeon. he put me to sleep with laughing gas and valium, and when I woke up, my wisdom teeth were gone, and I wasn't even in any pain! and that's with nothing to numb the areas. and my lower teeth were grown around my jaw bone, so he said he had to break the roots to remove them, and I still had no problems. I actually woke up hungry. I had mine removed on a friday, and I was at Church on sunday and no one could tell I'd had anything done. I had no swelling or bruising at all.
I know that you hear all sorts of things from people, but I don't think you have a thing to worry about. you will probably feel a lot better when you have them removed because you don't realize how much pressure those wisdom teeth put on your mouth when you don't have room for them.
everything's going to be fine, and you're going to do great! so don't worry okay?
Best Wishes, and write back when those teeth are gone and let us know how you're feeling.

I had mine removed and I regret it. It did not hurt at the time, but of course later it is sore. I had a good surgeon so he made sure I felt no pain during the operation.
The reason I regret having them out is because ever since then I have had problems with my jaw, TMJ type problems. I find it very difficult to relax my jaw.
The wisdom teeth really were not causing me any problems, just occasional soreness and then it would stop for months. I had them out because my dentist recommended it.
I don't know if someone could die or be badly injured from the process. The process itself went pretty well for me. I just don't like the outcome.
Hope this helps.

I had all 4 taken out at the same time (2 pulled, 2 cut out). Really not that bad. They used general anesthesia for my surgery, which I recommend.

Some people have bad reactions to anesthesia, but it's pretty rare. I don't have the stats on deaths, but I would think it would be somewhere in the range of 1 in a million (I'm taking a shot in the dark here, so the number is probably off by quite a bit) - definitely not a common occurrence.

If you're concerned, you should really discuss your concerns with your oral surgeon. He/she can get more accurate statistics that are relevant to your particular case.

I have never heard of someone dying in the process of getting their wisdom teeth pulled out, but it sounds like a rumor to me. Some of my friends have had their wisdom teeth removed, and they said that it didn't hurt because they were given shots in teir gums which numbed out all feeling in it during the procedure. Sometimes dentists also recommend medications for a few days after the procedure in case there is any discomfort.

There is always a risk when you go under anesthetic. Wisdom tooth removal doesn't hurt because you'll be put under--however it will hurt like hell for a week after. They prescribe strong painkillers to ease the pain. If the wisdom tooth is touching the nerve to the face, your face could be permenantly numbed -- forever. That happens in about 5% of patients. Also, in another 5% of patients, they accidentally break your jaw, which needs reset. Not a pleasant operation by any means.

I had my wisdom teeth out 6 years ago, they were impacted too. They put me to sleep and when I woke up I remember having that kind of numb face feel, and my mouth was packed with gauze. They told me to count the gauze that I put in my mouth for the next 24 hours because due to the swelling and lack of feeling in my face I might swallow one. The pain was bareable, but what was the worst was changing the darn gauze and rinsing out the blood clots that kept forming. The stitches disolved by themselves, and my appetite wasn't there anyway so I had no desire to eat more than liquids anyway. In about 3 days I was practically back to normal. I remember them telling me the risks too, but they have to tell you, even if the risk is rare. And you can get injured if the tooth is absessed or a root is tangled or stuck in the jaw, etc. But they can determine this before you go in for surgery and they will tell you.

I think you are referring to the gas that put you into a sleepy state, that has killed people. Getting your wisdom teeth out it depends on the person, I got mine out on the day before Thanksgiving and enjoyed turkey and everything the next day while my brother got his out and was out for a week due to swelling and discomfort, His was due to his teeth being so close to his sinus cavity but he was fine, The doctors is going to take x-rays to determine what kind of surgery you need to have them removed, and then you will go home with a prescriptions so...basically due what the doctor says and ask if you are still experiencing pain how long till you should call and schedule a revisit.Good luck.

yes, it hurts badly. No, that is just a misconception. if ever somebody dies, it has to be because of uncontrolled bleeding and usually, these are hemophiliacs (people with no clotting factors in their blood that they die of losing too much blood even by a simple needle prick). Don't be afraid, your wisdom tooth is your third molar, so if you have experienced molar extraction before, it's the same. your dentist will not subject you to something that will be harmful to you. talk to him and be assured. there are a variety of new techniques nowadays to prevent severe bleeding, and oh yes.. dental anesthetics nowadays are better and they prevent pain real good.

I got all 4 pulled out at once. The pain meds worked well and I was feeling better within a couple days. Don't worry about it, you'll be fine. It's a standard procedure.

I have had 3 of 4 out so far..Not a big deal ..although you should go to a really good oral surgeon. It does not hurt when they take it out because you are anesthetized.. Your gums may be a bit sore for a day or two afterwards
