Believe it or not, Timbuktu is a real town located in Mali, West Africa.

It's a real place but the word is often used with the connotation of "out there" or "far off". I think it's used that way because the word Timbuktu sounds SOOOO foreign and unfamiliar.

It is actually a real place in......Africa I think... My social studies teacher told me last year. I thought it wasn't a real place.
