Perhaps I have a bad personality, but I don't always feel like being chatty. As a matter of fact, I rarely feel like chatting up my colleages at school. Thusly I have been sort of a loner and definitely unpopular. Should I care? I obviously do, I wish I didn't.

Keeping to yourself isn't necessarily bad. That may just be your personality. A person of few words :) When it may become a challenge is if your silence is motivated by anxiety, feeling judged, feeling superior to your schoolmates, or being down all the time. Then your silence is a bit anti-social, and maybe you should practice warming up to people.

As for respect, I think people who stand up for themselves in a non-confrontational way tend to be respected. "Bending over backward" to please people will only give people the idea you can be walked over.

Have you given any thought as to how you've come to see social interaction as 'bending over backward' for people?

Respect has nothing to do with Popularity. You gain respect by showing people that you deserve it. You can show people you deserve it by being polite and treating others how you'd like to be treated. Some of the most popular people in school aren't respected, they are feared. But sometimes it takes becoming an adult to appreciate and understand that.

Be kind to everyone, even when they don't deserve it. But don't allow yourself to become a door mat either. Most of all be true to yourself and be the person you want to be. Respect comes from within first.

I wish you well.

I believe to get respect one must give it. Sit down some place quiet & really think about why you want to spend so much time alone. You don't have to belong to every social club or be the most popular kid in school & you don't need to participate in every conversation but you do need some sort of social life. If you never chat with your collegues at school they will think you are snobbish or weird. And I'm sure you are a very nice person with a wonderful personality but just don't make friends very easily. But at least try to reach out to one or two of your school mates & you may be surprised to find that they really like you & you like them. Every body should have at least one good friend. And we all need someone to talk to once in awhile. Just give it a try. Please!

Don't worry about what others think about you. Sometimes you have to march to the beat of a different drummer."Be the trend setter, never the trend follower".

It depends upon which way you bend... I think I wouldn't worry if I was popular.. Respect comes from within!!

I would argue the opposite. You will get no respect by being a doormat.

People who are by nature quiet have to learn to talk more. Take baby steps.

Just stop bending over backwards to please them. Just be your self and you will be just fine.
