Hopefully some of these websites will help:
http://www.geocities.com/westiez/grooming.htm
http://www.seefido.com/dog-grooming/html/west_highland_terrier.htm
http://www.petgroomer.com/Grooming101/Breeds/west_highland_white_terrier.htm

There's some book available but they seems a bit pricey:
http://www.amazon.com/Westies-Head-Tail-Ruth-Faherty/dp/1577790294
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/book.asp?ref=9781405111836&site=1

Or perhaps you'll get more/better advice on this forum:

Is this for a pet or for show? I ask because it's two different types of grooming techniques. For a pet you would use clippers. Professional grade is best. Don't waste your money on the cheaper sets. Depending on how short you want the trim, the body is a #10 or #7 blade. Chest and underbelly #10. The head in trimmed in a round shape. The furnishings (legs, skirt, chest) are longer and shaped to please the eye. You need to study many Westie pictures to get an idea of the pattern. For show trimming... the dog is completely hand stripped and sculpted. It's not something anyone can learn overnight.
There are grooming schools to teach pet grooming. For westies specifically, try a westie breeder. Perhaps they can help you.

There a book called "The All Breed Dog Grooming Guide" It has drawings and step by step instructions. You'll need a slicker brush, steel comb, ear powder, nail clippers, clippers (not human hair clippers) #10 blade, #5, #7 or #8 1/2 blade, scissors, thinning shears, as well as shampoo and conditioner.
The Westie should be bathed and groomed every 6 to 8 weeks.
Or Just find a groomer, pay 30-40 bucks and not deal with it at all! No fuss, no mess and you dont need to do anything but drop the dog off at the groomers!
