A bark collar is the only effective means to give the dog an immediate correction for his barking. They must be fitted properly to work correctly and they can be bought in small sizes to fit smaller dogs. I have used them in the past and they have always worked. Remember, as soon as the dog learns that barking has a consquence, they will stop barking, thus no longer requiring the collar.

It depends on the quality of the collar and the temperament of the dog. The biggest benefit is if you have neighbours who might be bothered and the dog barks while you're out. Spraying them in the face isn't going to work if you're not home to do it. It sounds like you don't have anyone closeby though. They shouldn't be used on a dog that is barking for a genuine reason, such as your dog's alerting you if someone is coming by. That is just plain cruel, it is the dog's natural instinct to alert the pack. They are designed to curb excessive barking (usually boredom barking), not to stop the dog from ever barking. Try giving your dog more to occupy his mind, it may have become a form of entertainment for him.

The shock collar seems sad to me, and if someone was breaking in or something, you would want your dog to bark.

I have a very barky little dog and I have a collar that makes a loud noise that only the dog can hear. He hates that noise and it keeps him from barking for no reason, though when someone comes to the door, he barks like crazy, per usual. They also make one that sprays water in their face when they bark, which would be pretty funny but I haven't tried it!

I dont like the shock collars either. They have muzzles you could try. They also have pinch collars. I didnt like them at first. I found a plastic one that I really like! It doesnt hurt the dog, just gets their attention. I think mine has worked well for teaching. I know your going to get a ton of answers saying watch the "Dog Whisper". Ceaser from the dog whisper does give great info! His show is on the Discover channel. Good Luck!
