Oak is still the least expensive durable hardwood. Choose the finnish based upon how long you'd like it to last before refinnishing and your traffic level of your home. If you'd like a more contemporary look consider a stained maple. Maple is also very hard. The Janka scale will help you to determine hardness of a particular species. Stay away from American Cherry and the softer woods if you want to avoid dings and dents. The clearer finnishes on the hardwood floors are a good way to spot quality. Generally the wear life of a finnish ranges from 10 years to 25 years. The wear life does not determine how easily it will scratch the only way to determine that is to scratch it. The polyurethane finnishes with the aluminum oxide are best. Aluminum oxide is the second hardest substance to a diamond.

Usually the finish, maintenance, and install are more important the the wood. There are 100 year old of most every type still looking good. Buy what you think looks good and consider stone/tile for areas where you track in water or plans very hard use.
