I have a lot of scars on my legs (from self harm) which are driving me crazy right now itching, but if I scratch them they're really painful. I can't use an antihistamine cream on them as they all contain steroids which inhibits skin healing, but it's really driving me crazy. I've tried cool water, I've tried moisturising creams, and neither seems to make any difference.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate them, it's awful!!!

Yes, this is completely about the itching, it's not about the self harm. I know myself that I need to stop self harming, and it's something I'm trying to deal with. Right now, I don't want to talk about it - I just want something to stop the bloody itching because it's driving me crazy........

If you've ever had poison ivy or another severe itch-producing problem, you know how hard it is to concentrate on anything other than how miserable you
are. The first step toward relief is to try to figure out the cause of the itching.
Try some of the following methods to ease the torment. They may even be helpful for spells of "all-over" itching.

Don't scratch! That just irritates the skin further, leading to more itching and more scratching.
Take cool or lukewarm (not hot) showers or baths. If you use soap, make it a mild type without scent or deodorant, and rinse it off completely.
Try adding a little baking soda to lukewarm bath water and soaking the area for several minutes.
Keep the skin from drying out, especially after baths, by applying a mild lotion without scent or color.
Lay a cold compress over the irritated area.
Stay away from heat and humidity. Clothing and bedcovers should be loose, light, and nonirritating. Cotton is probably best.
Avoid scratchy fabrics, such as wool and rough upholstery.
Apply an over-the-counter preparation designed for minor skin irritations, such as calamine lotion or Burow's solution.
Try an over-the-counter oral antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine. Such drugs are designed to control allergic reactions and itching. But they can also make you drowsy, so be careful about when you take them, and follow the directions on the container.

Hope it will get better for you soon!

You could try an antihistamine tablet like you get for hay fever, they can be quite affective at stopping irritation.
After I had an operation I was given them to stop the itching as the wound healed and they worked very well.

try bio oil available from superdrug, its great for itching and helps scars to disappear as well. i had a nasty hysterectomy scar and it worked a treat. hopefully it will get your mind off your itching and give you the strength you need to deal with the self harm. wishing you the very best of luck.

the itching is down to the fact that they are simply healing.. if you want to increase the speed in which this happens try

Dr Bachs rescue remedy cream... (works a treat)

if your worried about the scars try NIVIA face cream, apply plenty at regular intervals.

my cousin was hit by a truck years ago (his legs were bady bruised and cut - spent several months in a wheelchair whilst undergoing physio) and was told to try this by a neighbour... My auntie now tells everyone with anything to try it!!... but it does truly work !!
